My Native Land

Beryoza District

Beryoza district was founded  in January 1940. It is located in the central part of Brest region. Beryoza (before Beryoza-Kartuzskaya) is a main town.

The history of the land settlement dates back to ancient times.  The first hunters appeared in this district 9 thousand years BC. It is known from archaeological monuments of the stone age, ancient settlements near Zarechye and Sporovo. Also bronze age settlements were found in Zditovo.

Beryoza was mentioned in 1477. In the16th century the town became the property of the Sapieha. Kazimir Sapieha was a son of a famous chancellor Lev Sapieha. Kazimir founded the Carthusian monastery (1648-1666). Italian architects took part in the building.

During the Northern war the Polish king Augustus the Strong and Russian Emperor Peter the First visited this monastery. And even the Swedish king Charles the Twelfth was here. After the uprising of 1863 the monastery was dismantled. The barracks were built. In the 1930s a concentration camp for political prisoners of Western Belarus was placed in barracks. Nowadays we can see only the gate, the tower and the part of the hospital. The picture gallery and children’s creativity center are placed here.

Novye Pesky is widely spread over Lake Chyornoe and included Starye Pesky village and the remains of an ancient homestead of the noble active landlord and maecenas, the founder of many temples. The entrance gate with multistage towers, resembling the gate of a medieval castle, and the former stable, that has been rebuilt into people’s accommodation, of this rich romantic   homestead, are still preserved.

There are a lot of monuments on the land of Beryoza, that are connected with the  dramatic events of the Second World War .The station Bronnaya Gora is gravely famous. More than 50  thousand people were killed in 1942: there were the Jews from Beryoza town, Brest and other places. The symbolic rails, stretching into the sky, are the parts of the monument that is situated at the place of their death.

“The Defense of Zditovo” is a glorious page in the history of the war of partisans, when the Nazi fascists assaulted their front units against the  partisans. From 3 to 11 April 1944, there were heavy fights, the partisans took up defensive positions along the Dorogobuzh river, and the fascists made several attacks a day using air forces, artillery and mortars. But the partisans didn’t surrender, and when they began to run out of ammunition, they moved to the second defense linein the depth of swamps, where the Nazi fascists were afraid to pop into.

True nature lovers will be also interested in the land of Beryoza, because  there are the swamps of Sporovo right here, that are known as “the lungs of Europe”.

In the reserve among  pristine wetlands there are rare for  Europe species of fauna and flora - aquatic warbler, swamp turtle, dissolves in the spring its petals amazing flower Belarusian orchid - lady's slipper, there are 44 species of Red Book animals and 18 species of protected plants . Traditionally there is  the open championship of Belarus on manual mowing, where everyone can try their hand. And every five year there is the festival of  humor  “Sporovsky Zharty” which attracts the lovers of jokes, anecdotes not only from Belarus, but also from other countries.

On the 4th of  October 2009 the only Spiritual and Patriotic Complex was  opened   in The Old City Park. The complex consists of the natural landscape and architectural cult, memorial and recreational values.  In 1993 it was decided to perpetuate the memory of the ten natives of Beryozovschiny killed during the military duty in Afghanistan 1979-1989. The complex includes: a monument to the “Courage and Sorrow”, there are the examples of  military equipment; a fountain “the Bowl of Tears” ; Memorial Church in honor of Archangel Michael in the memory of all soldiers-internationalists, killed in  Afganistan  and The Old park. Spiritual and patriotic complex in the old park - the only one  on  the territory of the Republic of Belarus - immortalized the names of soldiers killed during the international duty.

The  Lovers of traditional culture will appreciate  our land in  rituals,  customs  and celebrations,  folk costumes, crafts, cuisine, legends - the Belarusian delicate soul lives in everything here.

The particular  value of  the town is the museum of local history and its department the Art Gallery. Such expositions  as “The history of one exhibit” - partisan knife, a self-made mine,  baptismal crosses from the places of mass shootings, a trophy typewriter, a walking stick from Reichstag and etc., “Classes in the forest partisan school” - a museum lesson in “a dugout” are really spellbinding. One of the brightest and the most heroic pages of the war  was the organization of schools in the forests of  the partisan detachments where children studied in spite of the war.  Now it  is reconstructed in one of the exhibit room. “The works of modern artists of the land of Beryoza” is the acquaintance with the works of the artists in the exhibit rooms of  the Art Gallery where the variety of talents of  local artists and skilled craftsmen are shown and their works can be bought. “From the folk spring” is a museum class with the elements of show and exposition of  ancient Belarusian crafts, rituals, talismans, costumes and etc. Every guest can take away a part of the land of Beryoza – a museum shop offer the tourists and the guests of Beryoza an exhibition-sale of Belarusian souvenirs – hand-made goods of straw, willow, flax, clay, plaster, leather, ceramics. There is a great choice of advertising production such as postcards, flags, booklets, books about Beryoza and others in  the museum.
